"We are all familiar with graphite, starting with our first pencil.
Sooner or later we experiment, shading an area of paper until it
becomes a silvery black shape. I've taken this universal experience
and turned it into three-dimensional sculpture.
The use of solid graphite as a sculptural material has been seminal
to my art. It is dense, visually impenetrable and psychologically dark.
The material speaks immediately to the eye with its jet smooth surface
and silvery highlights. My choice of architectural imagery in combination
with solid graphite has provided me with a vehicle for a narrative
statement as well as a sculptural statement.
Inspiration comes from two places – my love of architecture and my
reading of authors such as George Orwell and Samuel Beckett.
Using the rich forms of architecture and blending them with an
imaginative interpretation of literature and drama, the result becomes
a unique, timeless world. Who lurks behind those tiny windows
and massive forms? What are they up to?"
